The LifeWorks Mentoring Methodology

At LifeWorks Learning Center we do more than simply help students with homework. Our goal with each student we work with, is to help them form a positive, healthy relationship with school. This looks different depending on the individual, so we start by identifying the underlying issues that keep students from fulfilling their academic potential and customize our approach to meet their needs.

Organization and Motivation

One common complaint we hear from parents today is that students lack organization. What we have found, however, is that issues of organization tend to be manifestations of a more fundamental lack of motivation. Most organizational strategies are easy to learn, but difficult to implement -- especially for the unmotivated student. Thus, much of what we do at LifeWorks is help students shift their attitude towards school in order to increase their level of motivation.

The Importance of Attitude

By the time most students reach adolescence they are all too often bored with school. For most, this makes staying motivated difficult. Those who do stay motivated generally manage to do so only by scaring themselves with horror stories about what their future will look like if they don't do well. This strategy eventually backfires, because though it can keep students motivated in the short run, it translates into greater test anxiety and long-term burn out.

At LifeWorks, we help students tap into a healthy source of motivation: that of fulfilling their own potential. We know that true learning is also enjoyable. By creating positive learning experiences with students, we help them shift their attitude towards school. As this process gets underway, students start to take greater ownership of their academic lives and build confidence that stays with them long after their homework is done.
